Infant Development Milestones : Baby Safety

Babies are not aware of complexity of this world. They are trying to figure out different things in there own unique way. But there way of learning and knowing thing is not always safe. So, parents always have concerned with there safety: Safety for Physical and mental health. In this article we are going to discuss about some safety issues related to babies.
SIDS: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

This is the situation, when sometimes healthy baby died during the sleep due to unexpected/unknown  reasons. But preventive measures can help to lower down the risk. Some Preventive measures are”

  1. Remove extra items from the crib. eg: soft toys and blanket etc. to avoid smothering.
  2. Baby best Sleep Position is on his back.
  3. Don’t overdress your baby. 
  4. Don’t consume any smokable item near infant. It can cause suffocation to the baby. 
  5. Don’t sleep in the same bed with your baby to avoid any risk caused due to sleep. 
Shaken Baby Syndrome

Avoid shaking your baby. Baby’s Brain is very fragile. Too much shaking cause brain to move back and forth, brain hit the skull and which can cause serious brain injury or permanent disability and can even cause death.

Choking

This risk starts when baby is born, choking can occur while breast feeding or through mucous. When baby is 6 month old, there involves risk of choking due to solid food. Do not give them round fruit such as grapes as it caused many choking incidence.  Make Food Puree upto the age of 9 month and then gradually change baby ‘s food habit from puree to solid one. Give Baby enough time to learn chewing process.

Rolling

When baby start rolling, they can fall on unexpected/unsafe  places. So protect baby from unexpected injury. Keep your baby on safe place. Watch all the nearby places where baby can probably reach. Consider all possible danger for your baby and give full protection. If you are swaddling your baby, its time to stop it because for swaddling baby needs to be in back but if baby starts rolling, face will turn down and smothering can occur due to swaddler.

Burns/ Scars

When baby starts mobilization from one place to another to reach objects. This risk raises when baby starts crawling or walking. Parents or Guardian need to be extra careful with:

  1. Working on Stove (Baby should not be around while you are cooking)
  2. Electric Outlets
  3.  Water Tap (Sometime water comes out is extremely hot and can cause serious injury)
  4. While taking Hot Drinks (Watch for your baby, it can spill on baby’s soft skin and sometimes can leave permanent scar
Other Safety Issues

Apart from these issues there are some other issues related with baby’s safety.

  1. Drowning: Baby likes water but leaving them in water without supervision can be dangerous.
  2. Poison: Baby easily get attracted towards new things like medicines or cleaning product which involves harmful chemicals. So keep those chemicals away from baby’s reach.
  3. Car Seat Safety:  Car seat should be on the back seat not on front seat near the driver. Use rear car seat at least till the age of 1 year or your baby reaches specific weight. Rear seat provide more safety. 

         Follow all the standards mention on car seat manual to tie that seat properly and do safety check before letting baby sit in that.

 

   Try to make your home babyproof using baby safety product for kitchen cabinets, electric outlets, safety gates, safety around corners and lots of other baby safety products available in market.
