Baby Step By Step Growth Milestones
Parents are always concerned with their babies health and whether they achieved particular milestones or not. In this article, we will discuss everything in details about babies growth and achieving milestones.
Body Changes in Babies:

When Babies are born, they have membranous gap in skull, Which helps their skull to move down the birth canal. There are two types of Fontanelle:

  1. Anterior Fontanelle
  2. Posterior Fontanelle

These areas on head feels Squishy and Soft. They have different closing time:

Anterior Fontanelle : Closes around 18 months.

Posterior Fontanelle: 2 months.

Baby Head
Weight

The normal range for new born baby weight is between 5.5 lb. (2.5 kg) – 10 lb. (4.5 kg)

  • Up to 6 Months weight should get double from their  weight.
  • 12 months : Weight should get tripled from their birth  weight.
Length

The range for new born baby length is between 18 – 22 inch. (45.7 cm to 60 cm)

  • Length generally increases 1/2 – 1 inch every month up to 6 months
  • 3/8 inch (1 cm) every month from 6 – 12 months.
Teeth

Teeth eruption starts as early as 6 month in baby but in most of the cases first teeth erupt around 10 months of age. Lower Central Incisor comes first and till the age of 2 babies generally complete their set of 20 teeth which is also known as Milk Teeth or Temporary Teeth. 

Achieving Milestones:

Below is the list of some Important milestones to know, what baby should do in that particular month.

2 Months:  a. Moves head side to side

b. Track people’s faces/object with eyes.

c. Should try to hold their heads up when they are on stomach. (Tummy time is very important for babies).

d. Smiles

e. Make verbal noises like coos sounds.

4 Months: a. Baby will begin to like play.

b. Cooing or Babbling Sound (Baby will try to copy noises)

c. Holds and will try to reach for toys.

d. They will start rolling over. (This time parents need to be very careful as babies can roll over and can fall from heights. Stop Swaddling when baby starts roll over).

e. and up to this time baby start remembering faces and other objects.

6 Months: a. Baby can sit up with or sometimes without support.

b. Babbling will continue with addition of few vowels.

c. They will start recognizing their name and respond to it.

d. Stranger Anxiety starts beginning at this stage . When unfamiliar faces come to your house, they will not go to them, and can start crying.

e. They will start looking themselves into mirror. and it will be fun moment for them.

9 Months: a. Baby up to this stage will be able to sit independently.

b. Biggest change comes when they start Crawling. 

c. They will also try to stand by holding object at higher position. It will help them to learn walking in latter stage. 

d. They will be able to move objects from one hand to another.

e. They will have Pincer Grasp (Use of Thumb and Index Finger to hold objects or food).

f. Object Permanence will exist for them.

10 Months – 12 Months: a. Begin Walking (Some Babies take longer time to start walking, so if they takes 18 months to start walking, that’s fine but if baby doesn’t start walking at 18 month then try to consult your doctor).

b. This is the phase, when babies will have separation anxiety. 

c. Baby would be able to speak simple words like Ba – Ba, Ma- Ma, Etc.

d. Baby will start following simple commands such as No, Go, Stop etc.

e. There way of playing will also change and will start putting objects into box or pulling them out.
